The March toward Total War: Germany’s Doctrine of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare and the Sinking of RMS Lusitania

November 1 @ 7:00 pm

Lusitania by Norman Wilkinson, 1907

On May 7, 1915, the world heard the stunning news that a German submarine had torpedoed and sunk without warning the British passenger liner Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. The loss of 1,198 lives, including 128 Americans was the herald of modern warfare in which the boundaries between combatants and civilians were blurred and in time erased. Dr. George Vourlojianis will examine the events that led the Germans to adopt a doctrine of unrestricted submarine warfare and which led to the catastrophic sinking of the Lusitania.
