We’re looking for a Program Director to join our team! We want to work with a creative, curious, and hard-working individual who is eager to lead Humanities Washington’s Speakers Bureau (SB) and Think & Drink Conversation (T&D) programs, as well as special initiatives as assigned, so that these programs remain centered on fostering quality and timely conversation and dialogue throughout Washington State, with an emphasis on equity, diversity and inclusion.

Essential Responsibilities 

  • Speakers Bureau:
    • Direct and help curate the biennial statewide search for new scholars.
    • Oversee a biennial roster of scholars, cultural experts and speakers.
    • Oversee a quarterly host site application system, including communicating with the speakers and partners, conducting quarterly application review sessions, and providing essential promotional tools to the approved partners.
  • Think & Drink:
    • Produce events at various locations across the state, including recruiting and vetting appropriate speakers and moderators on humanities-based topics.
    • Conduct research on each program topic and prepare the speakers/panelists and moderators for each event.
  • Innovate and build program capacity through continual process improvement.
  • Engage with development staff in program fundraising activities.
  • Assist the Associate Director in program evaluation, including outcomes and impact measurement.
  • Other duties as assigned.Strategic Relationships
  • Act as the primary liaison to the SB roster and T&D speakers/panelists, scholars and moderators.
  • Manage relationships with varied program partners including library systems, museums, schools, colleges & universities, historical societies, community centers, retirement homes and various other non-profit organizations.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, act as program liaison to the board of trustees’ program committee.
  • Foster productive strategic relationships with program officers at other humanities councils across the country.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with an advanced degree in the humanities preferred.
  • Three years of program management experience in the non-profit sector required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of products. Salesforce experience preferred.
  • Willingness and the ability to travel occasionally within the state and very occasionally out-of-state.
  • Strong attention to detail, as well as solid problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Solid verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the nonprofit sector.

Resource Development Director Position

We’re looking for a Resource Development Director to join our team! We want to work with a creative, curious, and hard-working individual who is eager to help Humanities Washington with developing and growing our fund development and volunteer programs. This position will provide one-on-one support to the board, executive leadership, and volunteers engaged in building HW’s sustainability and long-term growth. They will also work with community members and funders to build lasting relationships that align with HW and its mission. We are looking for a candidate eager to expand their non-profit professional expertise or to transition applicable skills to a new field.

Responsibilities include:

Refine and implement existing annual and long-range strategic plans for fund development with a primary emphasis on individual giving, but also including corporate and foundation gifts, as well as special events and earned revenue.

Work closely with the Executive Director and the board to identify prospects, develop tools to aid in cultivating donors (current and prospective), and sustain stewardship activities to increase the size and stability of the funder base.

  • Manage individual donor retention strategy to increase number of donors who give year after year.
  • Enhance individualized giving program for high-capacity funders.
  • Refine and implement plan for engaging lower-capacity funders.
  • Manage planned giving strategy and outreach.
  • Create/implement strategies to expand Humanities Washington’s donor base.
  • Identify opportunities for in-kind contributions that offset existing organizational expenses.

Manage and/or perform all administrative aspects of fund development program.

  • Participate in budgeting and manage budget tracking.
  • Utilize database for donor tracking, gift tracking, acknowledgement, and long-term stewardship.
  • Coordinate follow-up reporting and stewardship on grant activities for funders.
  • Support potential earned revenue options through managing the business development pipeline.

Serve as staff lead for Fund Development Committee.

  • Work with committee chair to prepare agendas.
  • Recruit volunteer leadership for development activities.

Work with and coordinate contractors for fundraising events and grant writing.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A passion for the humanities and the work of Humanities Washington.
  • 4+ years’ experience in fund development or translatable experience in a similar field or one that utilizes similar skills as mentioned above.
  • Ability to build rapport and communicate effectively in writing, on the phone, and in person.
  • A commitment to furthering a culture of philanthropy at all levels of the organization.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a great deal of self-motivation.
  • Experience with CRM databases; experience with Salesforce a plus.
