Democracy barely skated through the 20th century;
Dr. A. Schlesinger Jr.The 2001 Ohio Forum, held in Marietta on October 3, was a collaboration between OHC and Marietta College’s Esbenshade Series. Featuring distinguished author and historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., the Forum’s theme was especially timely in light of recent national events. Hundreds of people gathered in the Marietta High School Auditorium to hear Schlesinger speak on The Future of Democracy in the 21st Century. His talk, an entertaining mixture of personal anecdotes, political insights and detailed historic facts, helped give an historic perspective to current events. His presentation was well received and greatly appreciated by the crowd in Marietta.

2002 Ohio ForumDesigner M. Graves
Plans are well underway for the 2002 Ohio Forum, to be held on Sunday April 14 at 2:30pm in the Peristyle at the Toledo Museum of Art. Architect Michael Graves will present a lecture, “Designing for the Consumer,” to complement The Alliance of Art and Industry: Toledo Designs for a Modern America, a special exhibit at the Museum.

Graves is an internationally known architect and Princeton University professor. Although he has received numerous awards for his work in building design, Graves has excelled in the design of domestic products. Currently specializing in mass-market productions, he has found a way to continuously refine architecture and design for everyday life. Graves designs everything from

This exhibition explores the important role that the city’s designers, its workforce, and its art museum played in the development of modern industrial design, and how the ideas and products that resulted forever changed American life.

Design is pervasive and impacts many areas of our lives. Michael Graves’ presentation will illustrate the effect of his work and will help us better understand how architecture and design influence our everyday lives.
