Democracy and the Informed Citizen

In this interview, which looks forward to his Democracy and the Informed Citizen article in the fall issue of Pathways magazine, writer and reporter Tim Feran discusses the bleak new landscape of local newspapers in Ohio. A perfect storm of conditions has left communities with only “ghost newspapers”—and little to no access to local news.

“As more ghost newspapers begin to haunt smaller cities and towns, there’s a greater risk of political corruption and for diminished voter turnout and less civic engagement. It’s a nightmare scenario for democracy,” he writes.

Here, Feran tells the story of the shrinking newspaper business what that means for local communities in Ohio.
