Connecticut Humanities (CTH) is seeking an Executive Director who will advance our mission of promoting intellectual curiosity, understanding, critical thinking and lifelong learning through partnerships, collaborative programming and grants.

Since 1974, the Connecticut Humanities Council Inc. has been the chief advocate in support of the state’s museums and historical societies, promoting the need for scholarship and intellectual integrity. Public engagement with literature, specifically library-based reading programs, has been a core offering in our promotion of general literacy in Connecticut.

Federal funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and state funding have been our principal sources of income. Foundation support and modest individual donations have supplemented those funds to varying degrees each year.

Connecticut’s fiscal crisis has resulted in a major reduction in state funding of CTH.  Due to the resiliency of our staff and good contingency planning, the organization has continued to offer many of its programs.  Our funding position has now been clarified and CTH is positioned to move forward in line with our current financial reality.

The Opportunity

As the chief executive of Connecticut Humanities, the Executive Director is the public face of the organization.  The position reports to a 17-member board of directors. The Executive Director leads a staff of six highly skilled individuals.  There is an Interim Executive Director in place.

This position requires leadership and management both within the organization and beyond it within the larger community.  Given the quality of the staff, the current emphasis tilts in favor of relations with outside constituencies.

As the principal spokesperson and advocate for CTH and the humanities, the Executive Director is expected to engage with Connecticut’s heritage, library, and educational and cultural communities. The cultivation of government, foundation and business communities will be required to build long-term financial support.

The Executive Director will have the ability to develop and implement an overall strategic direction established in partnership with the board and staff and will be accountable to the board for delivering tangible results in line with the organization’s strategy.

A key element of this strategic plan is the development of new and more diverse sources of revenue.  At the same time, existing resources need to be consistently focused on the organization’s priority activities and constituencies to ensure that the humanities remain vital to our economic and societal future.

The Executive Director is expected to function effectively in the following areas:


  • Partner with the board to establish strategy and lead staff to develop and implement operational plans and achieve results.
  • Ensure effective board engagement and support.
  • Cultivate and develop staff to instill a sense of entrepreneurship and maximize their individual/team impact.

Advocacy and Outreach

  • Act as principal spokesperson and advocate for humanities statewide, regionally and nationally to generate enthusiasm and expand support.
  • Be the primary liaison with private and public funders such as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the State of Connecticut.
  • Strengthen and expand current humanities and community coalitions supporting the humanities across Connecticut and at the Federation of State Humanities Councils level.

Marketing and Development

  • Develop and implement an overall plan to unify marketing, communications and fundraising efforts for CTH.
  • Direct the development and implementation of a robust fundraising initiative in partnership with the board and play a principal role in developing major grants and individual/corporate giving.

Operations and Fiscal Management

  • Align the six-person staff and $1million budget with strategy to ensure good stewardship of funders’ money and achieve demonstrable results.
  • Set direction for programming and build core programs to maximize impact and audiences reached.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate must be a passionate advocate for the humanities and their relevance, be a highly persuasive public communicator for CTH and be a proven leader and operational manager.

The desired professional background, skills, knowledge and leadership attributes of candidates include:

  • Demonstrated passion for the humanities.
  • A great enthusiasm for the mission and potential of CTH in promoting the humanities.
  • Dynamic engagement as a public spokesperson for an organization and/or the humanities with a flair and proven track record cultivating partnerships and collaborating with constituencies.
  • Experience with diversifying nonprofit funding and a proven track record executing a fundraising plan.
  • A fundamental understanding of humanities programs especially as it applies to broad non-academic audiences.  Must have experience creating, financing, managing and evaluating core programs to reach broad audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership/management experience in nonprofit organizations. An inspiring leader to empower staff, recognize their distinct talents and manage them for the benefit of CTH.
  • An entrepreneurial flair, with the ability to think strategically and analytically.
  • Experience working effectively with a volunteer board of directors.
  • A keen insight into the current direction of humanities scholarship, preferable exhibited by an advanced degree in a humanities field.
