‘The Lincoln School Story’ Screening & Panel Discussion
October 7, 2025 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
The Bobcat Antiracism Collective presents an evening to explore the power of the arts and humanities to tell untold stories. In partnership with Ohio Humanities, the event includes a viewing of The Lincoln School Story, a documentary that tells the inspiring story of a group of courageous African American mothers who fought for school integration in Ohio in 1954.
Hear from a panel of scholars, educators, and community leaders about the impact and legacy of the landmark Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education, moderated by Dr. Melvin Barnes, an OSU grad and assistant professor of history at the University of Michigan-Flint who is a featured historian in the documentary. Panelists include:
Valerie Boyer, a vocalist, musician, dancer, poet, activist, minister, historian, and most of all an educator. She is currently the School and Inclusive Community Programs Coordinator at Ohio History Connection.
Carlotta Penn, founder of Daydreamers Press and co-author of the children’s book Step by Step: How the Lincoln School Marchers Blazed a Trail to Justice.
Dr. Ted McDaniel, a professor of music at The Ohio State University for 35 years and is a specialist in jazz history, jazz performance, and African American music.
This event is appropriate for all ages and there is no cost to attend.
The Bobcat Antiracism Collective (BARC) is a group of Grandview Heights High School students and staff who collaborate to broaden the school’s predominantly white students’ knowledge about and empathy for Black experiences in America–as well as the experiences of other people of color; educate students on the systems and institutions, both nationally and locally, that perpetuate racial inequality; and provide students with specific antiracist thoughts and actions.
